Turf Grasses: The Ins and Outs

The lawn is a staple of any nice home these days.We can
plant all of the beautiful flowers we want, but if the lawn is
not lush and green, the garden just isn’t complete.Water is
perhaps the most obvious ingredient in producing a green
lawn but there are several other factors that must be considered
for success. We are inundated with products today
that promise they will deliver, and it’s hard to know what is
necessary and what is not. Let’s take a look at the best turf
grasses for our area and break down what they need to
thrive.
Types of Turf Grass
Zoysia is perhaps the most recognizable turf grass in
Columbus. The two most common varieties are Emerald,
which offers a thin blade, andMeyer, which offers a thicker,
more coarse blade. In my opinion, both are outstanding and
you should choose according to your preference. Zoysia is
attributed with being the formal choice for a lawn.Most upscale
neighborhoods and businesses use this type of grass. Maintain zoysia at 0.5-1.5 inches in height. Fertilize with a
slow release fertilizer three times during the spring and summer
to maintain a healthy, green appearance.
Bermuda is also widely used in our area. It is the best
choice for high traffic areas where people do a lot of walking
or children play Maintain Bermuda grass at 1.0-1.5
inches. This type of grass requires more fertilizer than zoysia. Depending upon the site, you will likely need to fertilize four
to five times during the spring and summer.
