THE HUGHSTON CLINIC
6262 Veterans Parkway • Columbus • (706) 324-6661 • hughston.com

Based in Columbus, Ga., the Hughston Clinic was founded in 1949 by the late orthopaedic surgeon Jack C. Hughston,M.D., who was known as the father of sports medicine. This year, 2009, the Hughston Clinic celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Over the past 60 years, the Hughston Clinic has evolved into a vibrant, multi-specialty orthopaedic practice with expertise in sports medicine, spine, knees, shoulders, hands, elbows, feet and ankles, total joint replacement, trauma, rehabilitation and more.

The Hughston Clinic has gained worldwide respect as a pioneering orthopaedic center of excellence. InMarch 2009, Orthopedics Today magazine recognized the Hughston Clinic as one of the industry’s “Pioneer Clinics.”

The Hughston Clinic currently has 19 board-certified orthopaedic surgeons who serve nine locations in Georgia (Albany, Columbus, Cordele, LaGrange, Thomaston, Valdosta, Vidalia) and Alabama (Auburn, Dothan). Supporting and strengthening the Hughston Clinic is the Hughston Foundation, a nonprofit institution founded in 1968 and dedicated to research, education and training.

In 2008, the physicians of the Hughston Clinic purchased a hospital in Phenix City and renamed it Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital. The 62-bed hospital positions Hughston as a complete, vertically integrated health-care system for orthopaedic care.

It all began 60 years ago with Dr. Hughston providing Friday night medical coverage at local high school football games. Today, many physicians at the Hughston Clinic serve as team doctors for area high school and college athletic teams.

Other growing orthopaedic specialties at the Hughston Clinic include spine care and joint replacement surgery. “We were the front runners in sports medicine, and now we are on the leading edge of spine services and total joint arthroplasty,” said John I.Waldrop,M.D., orthopaedic surgeon and president of the Hughston Clinic.

The four spine specialists at the Hughston Clinic—Thomas N. Bernard, M.D. J. Kenneth Burkus, M.D., John D. Dorchak, M.D. and DouglasW. Pahl,M.D.—have immersed themselves into emerging areas of spine care.

Carlton G. Savory, M.D., FACS, leads the Hughston Clinic’s total joint replacement services, which has grown in volume over the last 15 years. “We are absolutely dedicated tomaking sure the Hughston Clinic will be around for another 60 years,” said Savory.
